865 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: First Contact
Location: Medical Bay
Timeline: Mission Day Three, 0700

With the chaos of his transfer and the First Contact scenario with the Helivans, Rylen Lyo had nearly forgotten about his weekly maintenance medications. The finiis’raal bonding process was a complex and frankly quite inconvenient thing, which is why Rylen chose to artificially suppress it through a combination of meditation and drug therapy. Because of the potential side effects, the drug was required to be administered by a Starfleet physician. And thus his presence in the medical bay at 0700.

So many staff members had come aboard in the last few days that Rylen did not recognize. The hour was still early, so Alpha Shift was almost ready to start. Since the was no reception desk, Rylen simply found what he assumed was a staff member and spoke to them.

“Excuse me,” he began. “I just need to get my maintenance dose of Peloxidine. Do you know who I could see about that?”

"You see me"

The Staff Member turned around. A caitian with bright blue hair, medical white uniform with a equally white lab coat and a big smile on thier face.

"I'm Dr. Morgan Alexander-Harrington. You said you're here for a shot of Peloxidine?"

They ask as they walk over to the pharmacology station and begins synthizing the Peloxidine.

“Yes Doctor,” said Rylen with his trademark smile. The empathic impression he got from Caitians were always interesting, but this one was very different than the typical. Felinoids generally have a distinctive emotional timbre between their genders, but the Kriosian got an almost neutral vibe from Doctor Alexander-Harrington. “If I am going to continue to suppress the finiis’raal then I need to take it under supervision.”

Morgan turns around, the hypospray in their hand.

“The Finiis’raal?”

They asked, tilting their head as they gestured for Rylen to take a seat on the biobed.

“Is that something similar to the Vulcan Pon’Farr, or Caitian Heats?”

They asked curiously.

“Yes and no,” said Rylen as he hopped quickly onto the biobed and sat up ramrod straight. “The finiis’raal is an unbreakable empathic and hormonal bond. Made even more complicated when you are seeking a partner of the same gender.”

Morgan nods.

“So much like the Vulcans mating bonds or perhaps the Asari of Thessia then. This medicine, I assume suppresses those hormonal urges? Have you experienced any side effects from the medication I should be made aware of?”

They asked.

Rylen nods. “It not only suppresses the hormonal changes but it also blocks the formation of the empathic bond.” He pauses for a second. “I think I’m a good catch, Doc. I’m of high noble birth. My family is wealthier than some planets. I’m just picky and don’t want to settle. And as far as side effects…just an occasional mild headache.”

Morgan smiles.

“I am the heir to the Earldom of White Heaven on Alpha Centauri. So I know the feeling. Everyone expected me to be some debutante or lady in waiting. I didn’t want to be either, it never felt…right. I’m just Morgan, neither he or she, just…Morgan. Though the money was nice to pay for Med School.”

“Being able to pretty much buy what you want whenever is pretty great,” said Rylen cautiously. “But the money always comes with strings.”

“True, but I’ve found that every once in a while, I don’t mind blowing a ton of it just for a moment to feel…me”

Morgan says

“I’ll also admit that it’s also…lonely at times”

“It doesn’t have to be. Lonely, that is.”

Morgan looks at him.

"We do seem to have alot in common. I wouldn't mind having a friend to talk too, or to do things with."

They smile as they speak.

“Friends are great to have,” said Rylen with a small smirk. “I’m sure we can find plenty of fun things to do. But…we have a problem. I still need my shot, Doctor.

"OH! Sorry"

Morgan smiles as they press the hypospray to Rylen's neck and injected the medicine with a hiss.

"And Done!"

They beam with a happy swish of thier tail.

“Thanks, Doc.” Rylen gestured toward the door. “I’m due back on the bridge. Once we literally move a comet, we should have lunch. Nothing like an impossible task to motivate you, right?”

“I am free for lunch and it’s definitely a good motivator for doing impossible things, though Starfleet does then to do the impossible from time to time.”

Morgan says as they go return the hypo to the dispensary, before coming back to help Rylen off the biobed.

The Ops Chief graciously took the offered hand (paw?) and slid off the biobed, his polished boots landing with a dull thud on the sickbay floor. “Much appreciated, my good Doctor. See you around.” The Kriosian winked at the Doctor, who was cute in their own distinctive way, and turned toward the exit.

Morgan smiles at him as he leaves, having met a new best friend in Rylen. They turn and go back to their office to work on paperwork.
