Family

Father Vorek (Romulan). A political dissident smuggled into the Federation by Spock’s underground reunification network. After Elena's death, he faced intense anti-Romulan xenophobia, forcing Chaol to grow up fast and highly defensive.
Mother Elena Westfall (Human). A brilliant structural engineer at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars. Killed during the Synth Attack of 2385.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Chaol Westfall projects an easy pragmatism—steady, alert, and deeply grounded. Once a dedicated Security and Tactical officer, the horrors of Frontier Day broke his desire to carry a weapon, prompting a lateral transfer to Operations. As an Ops Chief, he uses his tactical mind to manage ship logistics, coordinate repairs, and protect the crew by maintaining the ship's systems rather than through force. He is Narud Mon’s anchor; his quiet, physical discipline and steady presence cut right through the Kriosian’s empathic anxieties.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
Improvisational Adaptation: Excels when standard protocols fail. He can look at a broken system (or a compromised tactical situation) and instantly find an unconventional solution.
Grounding Presence: Does not panic. His martial arts background gives him a deep well of emotional control, which is incredibly soothing to an Empathic Metamorph like Narud.
Logistical Mastery: Transitioning from Security to Operations means he understands both how a ship is attacked and exactly how to reroute power to keep it from falling apart.
Weaknesses:
Weapons Aversion (Post-Trauma): Since Frontier Day, he harbors a deep, visceral reluctance to hold or fire a phaser, struggling with the memory of aiming at his own crewmates.
Protective Overreach: He is fiercely protective of Narud. If Narud is threatened, Chaol's old, lethal Security instincts can resurface, overriding his Starfleet restraint within some reason.
Hobbies & Interests The Fusion Dojo: Chaol dreams of opening a multi-species martial arts dojo. He currently teaches a fusion of Starfleet defensive tactics, Suus Mahna (Vulcan), and Romulan martial arts in the ship's gymnasium, focusing entirely on disarming and subduing without lethal force.
Meditation: Practices rigorous kinetic meditation, which helps him process his Frontier Day trauma.

Personal History Childhood & The Mars Attack (2369–2387): Raised on Mars. At age 16, he lost his mother during the Synth attack on Utopia Planitia. The resulting anti-Romulan paranoia in the Federation made life difficult for him and his father. Seeking structure and a way to protect what little he had left, Chaol enlisted in Starfleet the moment he was of age, tracking straight into Security.
Service Record Starfleet Academy & Nicknamed "Chaos" (2387–2391): During a high-level colony extraction simulation, a power surge corrupted the holodeck's safety protocols and IFF sensors. Holographic enemies began firing at lethal settings, while Chaol's squadmates registered as hostiles. In the ensuing panic, two of his squadmates suffered minor injuries from friendly fire before diving behind cover. Realizing the sensors were lying and standard tactics would get them killed, Chaol took command. He explicitly ordered his squad to stay down, then blasted the simulated gravity plating and lighting generators, plunging the room into dark, zero-G freefall. Stripped of reliable sensors, he abandoned Starfleet regulation. Using sparking EPS conduits as improvised weapons, he launched himself through the floating debris, neutralizing the enemy targets through brutal, close-quarters martial arts in the dark.
When the instructor asked what happened, Chaol simply replied, "Adaptation, sir." He was immediately branded with the callsign "Chaos." The rest of his academy years were full of the usual discipline he'd applied to his martial arts training and early studies.
Security Career & The Vanguard (2391–2400): Chaol rose quickly through the Security ranks, known for leading from the front. In 2400, he was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Security on a massive Ross-class cruiser USS Vanguard. It was here he met Narud Mon, an isolated, propulsion engineer. Chaol's grounded pragmatism provided a safe haven for Narud, and over the course of a year, they forged a deep, romantic bond (not to be confused with the finiis'ral bonding).
Frontier Day Disaster & Transfer to Operations (2401–2403): On Frontier Day, the Borg signal assimilated all crew members under 25. Chaol and Narud survived the nightmare together. While Narud vented decks and locked down engineering, Chaol was forced to physically fight and lock up the young ensigns he had sworn to protect. The trauma broke Chaol's desire to be the ship's "muscle." In the aftermath, he requested a transfer to Operations—choosing to heal and maintain the ship rather than police it.
Present (2403): With three years of shared history and mutual survival binding them together, Chaol and Narud secure joint assignments on the USS Intrepid. While Narud commands the warp core, Chaol helps manage the ship's operations, acting as the steady, unbreakable shield for the man he loves.
